The Cabinet has greenlit the expansion of the termite baiting program to combat the widespread issue of infestation in Fiji. The World Bank announced that it will provide funding specifically for baiting homes, particularly for residents earning less than $30,000 in the Western and Northern Divisions. This initiative also targets individuals living in squatter settlements within the most affected areas.
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has been tasked with overseeing and monitoring this expanded program. This effort represents a key component of the government’s strategy to eradicate termites and tackle the problems associated with their infestation. Additional strategies are being formulated for further action in this regard.
The Office of the Prime Minister is taking the lead in this effort, collaborating closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to implement the termite baiting program effectively. The Asian Subterranean Termite (AST) has plagued Fiji for over 15 years, particularly damaging homes in regions such as Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa, with reported incidences also noted in Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and Nakasi.
This initiative offers hope to communities affected by termite damage, providing much-needed assistance and resources to rebuild and protect their homes. By collaborating with international partners and local authorities, the government is taking significant steps towards improving housing stability and safeguarding the living conditions of its citizens.
Summary: The Fiji Cabinet has approved an expansion of the termite baiting program, funded by the World Bank, to assist low-income households in the Western and Northern Divisions affected by termite infestations. The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will oversee the program, which is part of a broader governmental effort to address the issue and minimize damages caused by termites in the region.
