The Cabinet has approved the expansion of its termite baiting program aimed at combating the destructive impacts of termites in Fiji. According to a statement from the World Bank, funding will specifically support initiatives targeting homes with annual incomes below $30,000 in the Western and Northern Divisions, including those in squatter settlements identified in high-risk areas.

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will take charge of the oversight and monitoring of the baiting program. This initiative is a crucial part of a broader governmental strategy to not only eradicate the termite infestation but also to address its related challenges effectively. Further comprehensive strategies will be developed for future consideration, underscoring the commitment to tackle this pressing issue.

The Office of the Prime Minister is set to spearhead the program in close partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji. The formosan subterranean termite (AST) has plagued Fiji for more than 15 years, causing extensive damage in regions recognized as red zones, including Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa. There have also been reported infestations in nearby areas such as Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and Nakasi.

This initiative represents a hopeful step forward in safeguarding homes and improving living conditions for vulnerable populations impacted by termite infestations. It not only highlights the collaborative efforts between government agencies and international bodies like the World Bank but also shows a genuine commitment to community welfare and environmental stewardship.
