Sugarcane farmers in Lovu Lautoka have voiced significant concerns regarding termite infestations that are endangering their crops. These issues were brought to the attention of Inosi Kuridrani, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, during a meeting with the farmers. This meeting followed the recent transfer of sugar industry responsibilities to the Ministry.

The farmers reported that termite damage has already resulted in observable losses in certain areas. They expressed frustration over the lack of effective chemical treatments available to combat these pests. In response to their plight, Kuridrani vowed to engage with Biosecurity authorities, who will visit the affected regions to assess the situation and explore potential control strategies.

Additionally, the farmers raised concerns about the compensation processes for crops lost due to unforeseen circumstances. They highlighted the delays faced in processing claims through the Sugarcane Tribunal for unharvested cane, which has added to their financial stress.

Moreover, the farmers brought up several other pressing issues, including expiring land leases, inadequate drainage, poor conditions of access roads, soaring costs related to harvesting and transportation, high expenses related to farm development, and inefficiencies at the mills that lead to crushing delays.

To mitigate the impact of these challenges, farmers are urging for swift intervention to control the termite issue and achieve stability in production. Their proactive approach reflects a strong commitment to preserving the integrity of the sugarcane industry in the region, which is crucial not only for their livelihoods but also for the local economy. By fostering cooperation between farmers and government officials, there is hope for effective problem-solving and a brighter outlook for the future of sugarcane farming in Lovu Lautoka.
