The Asian Subterranean Termites baiting initiative commenced yesterday, with the first installation taking place at a residence on Lovu Crematorium Road in Lautoka. Termite Taskforce co-chairperson Sashi Kiran emphasized the necessity for all 775 homes receiving support to begin the baiting process. Flick Hygiene won the government contract to implement the program.
Kiran noted that starting the baiting is critical to protecting any new timber being installed in the homes. The government is financing the baiting systems, which will be closely monitored by Flick Hygiene through data tracking and biosecurity measures to ensure there are no remaining termites.
She urged residents to treat not just their homes but also their entire property and surrounding areas. Since termite colonies exist underground, there is a risk of reinfestation without proper baiting. The government plans to bait thousands of homes in the Lautoka area as part of a pilot program, which will serve as a basis to potentially expand the process nationwide.
Collaborations with various pest control companies are underway to provide termite bait options in Fiji, and some companies have begun registering baits at affordable prices for residents. Kiran pointed out that successful termite management in places like Queensland, Australia, involves yearly baiting by homeowners to prevent damage.
Several properties in Lautoka have experienced decreased market value due to termite-related damage. Therefore, maintaining responsibility for ongoing baiting is essential for homeowners. The government is currently assisting due to the long-standing and damaging nature of the problem, and educational programs will be developed to inform residents about the baiting process and make bait purchasing accessible.
