For over three years, over 20 students at Valelawa Primary School in the Northern region have continued their education under challenging conditions, attending classes in tents. This situation arose after Cyclone Yasa devastated the school’s facilities, rendering the classroom unusable.
School manager Dharmendra Prasad explained that two tents have been set up within the school’s premises to accommodate the students’ learning needs. Unfortunately, the classroom block, which was more than 60 years old, could not be salvaged due to its deteriorated state.
Efforts to obtain comments from the acting permanent secretary for Education, Meli Nacuva, were unsuccessful before the publication of this article.
Despite these difficulties, the determination of the students and staff to continue education in such conditions speaks volumes about their resilience. Community support and efforts to rebuild and provide safe learning environments are crucial for the future of these students. It is a reminder of the importance of investing in educational infrastructure, especially in areas vulnerable to natural disasters.
Hopefully, there will be initiatives soon to support the reconstruction of their school and improve educational facilities, allowing these students to learn in a safe and comfortable environment once again.
