The 2024/2025 Suva Women’s T20 League resumed its fourth round of competition at Albert Park in Suva last Saturday, showcasing a series of exciting matches among eight participating teams. After a short break for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, players returned eager to demonstrate their skills and determination to succeed.

Nausori Majidez kicked off the day with a commanding victory over the Black Ducks, winning by 57 runs. The Majidez team scored a total of 136 runs while capturing two wickets in their 20 overs. In another thrilling match, the Veiyasana Stars triumphed over the Lami Lights, winning by 10 wickets. The Stars efficiently chased down the Lights’ score of 53 runs, finishing with 54 runs in just 6.5 overs. The third clash saw the Black Ducks overcoming the Sarafui Sinas by six wickets, with the Ducks scoring 116 runs to the Sinas’ 113 in 20 overs.

This league is vital not just for local competition; it serves as an important preparatory platform for the national team selection ahead of the inaugural Four Nations tournament in New Caledonia scheduled for March. Cricket Fiji president Sitiveni Rokoro highlighted the significance of the league in identifying talent for the national squad, noting that only two rounds remain in this round robin format. The top two teams will go on to compete against finals from Nadi, intensifying anticipation among players and fans alike.

As women’s cricket continues to grow in Fiji, both locally and on the international stage, the league acts as a foundational step towards greater representation. With more competitive opportunities on the horizon, including the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier later this year, the future looks bright for aspiring female cricketers.

In summary, the recent matches in the Suva Women’s T20 League not only showcase the athletic talent of the participants but also reinforce the momentum of women’s cricket in Fiji, as the nation prepares for important upcoming tournaments. The combination of local engagement and international opportunities provides an encouraging outlook for the sport’s development in the region.
