Tensions Rise in Fiji Parliament Over Bridge Collapse Blame Game

The Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has expressed skepticism about Opposition MP Ketan Lal’s understanding of government operations. This remark came in response to Lal’s recent call for Tuisawau to resign after the collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi on Monday.

Lal criticized the government, alleging that the bridge’s failure is further evidence of its negligence towards ensuring the safety and welfare of the Fijian people. In defense, Tuisawau highlighted Lal’s long tenure at Fiji National University, suggesting that despite his education, Lal seems to struggle with grasping the realities of governmental processes.

Tuisawau also pointed out the irony in Lal’s criticisms, questioning how he can remain in Parliament when his party has suffered significant leadership resignations, including that of Voreqe Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He reminded that Lal’s position in Parliament was secured through the votes of the constituents.

This exchange not only showcases the tensions within the political landscape of Fiji but also highlights the importance of accountability in government as officials respond to public safety concerns. While the situation may seem contentious, it presents an opportunity for the government to reevaluate its infrastructure priorities and engage in constructive dialogue with opposition members to collectively improve safety measures for the Fijian population.
