Tennis Upsets and Resilience: Badosa’s Nail-Biter at Ningbo Open

Eighth-seeded Paula Badosa from Spain secured her spot in the second round of the Ningbo Open in Ningbo, China, by defeating Russia’s Diana Shnaider 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday.

Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva had a dominant performance against Caroline Dolehide, winning 6-2, 6-0. Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch came from behind to triumph over Hungary’s Anna Bondar with a score of 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4. Meanwhile, China’s Xiyu Wang delivered a strong match against Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova, winning decisively 6-2, 6-0, and Mirra Andreeva of Russia also claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Varvara Lepchenko.

Before the tournament commenced, two top seeds announced their withdrawals: No. 1 Jasmine Paolini of Italy due to a left foot injury and No. 3 Emma Navarro due to illness.

At the Japan Open, eighth-seeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto from Italy took over three hours to defeat French qualifier Jessika Ponchet 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) in the first round in Osaka. Cocciaretto managed to save 14 of 20 break points while converting six of her 15 opportunities, earning a second-round match against Japan’s Aoi Ito, who prevailed over Sofia Kenin 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands eliminated No. 6 seed Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Lamens’ next challenge will be Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, who won in straight sets against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, 6-3, 6-4. McCartney Kessler advanced after saving seven of eight break points to win 6-4, 6-1 against Japan’s Ena Shibahara. Denmark’s Clara Tauson impressed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katie Volynets, recording 10 aces in the process.
