A specialized taskforce from the Southern Division is working alongside Valelevu Police in investigating a break-in that occurred at the Shri Santan Daram Mandir in Nadera. During the incident, damage was inflicted upon the temple wall and office grill, with estimates of the repair costs reaching around $250. Fortunately, initial reports from the temple authorities indicated that no items were stolen.
However, the situation has become more intricate as a recent media report contradicted these claims, asserting that offerings valued at $1,500 were taken. This discrepancy has prompted Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu to direct investigators to clarify the conflicting accounts and has highlighted the importance of avoiding misinformation spread within the community.
Commissioner Tudravu condemned the incident, labeling it a “cowardly attack” on a place of worship, and urged against allowing such events to breed religious intolerance. “It’s essential that we address misinformation that could fuel division among our communities,” he stated.
To aid in the investigation, K9 officers have been deployed, and house-to-house inquiries are being conducted to gather more information on the break-in. The police have also called on the public to avoid speculation about the incident and allow law enforcement to ascertain the facts.
In light of similar incidents across Fiji, including recent break-ins at other temples, there is a growing concern about the safety of places of worship. Such vandalism not only disrupts community harmony but also calls into question the respect afforded to diverse faiths in the region. Nonetheless, the ongoing investigations represent a hopeful opportunity for communities to rally together and reinforce their commitment to protecting these sacred spaces, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
