The TEMC Warriors rugby team from Soso Village in Kadavu is committed to developing young talent as they prepare for the prestigious Fiji Bitter Mataso Sevens tournament happening next week. After gaining valuable experience during the recent Fiji Bitter series in Kadavu, the team is ready to put their skills to the test at the upcoming event.
Head coach David Dakuitoga is actively guiding the team’s preparations, focusing on the individual growth of players while aiming to harmonize the unique talents of both local and guest athletes. Although the Warriors did not participate in the Malake 7s, club president Sireli Volavola has ambitious plans for a developmental initiative, marking the start of their efforts to compete in various tournaments within their financial capacity.
Dakuitoga emphasized the importance of helping younger players assume their roles within the team, especially as many seasoned players on the Fiji 7s team are unavailable due to national duties. “We are working on getting our young players to step up to own their roles and positions,” he stated. With high expectations placed upon these emerging athletes, the coaching staff is dedicated to ensuring they are prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
The team has adopted a unique approach that prioritizes player welfare and support, which Dakuitoga believes is crucial for optimal performance. He also expressed gratitude to Top End Mobile Contracting, the sole sponsor for their project.
The cultural ties between Soso Village and its community are a significant aspect of this team, further fostering unity and pride among members. The Fiji Bitter Mataso Sevens will take place on November 15-16 at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the skills of young athletes but also nurtures a sense of community and cultural pride, making it a hopeful prospect for the future of rugby in the region. The TEMC Warriors are setting a positive precedent for sports development in rural Fiji.
