Large crowds of mourners dressed in black filled the streets of Tehran as Iran held a funeral on Saturday for military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians who lost their lives in the recent conflict with Israel. The ceremony recognized at least 16 scientists and 10 senior military commanders, including notable figures like Major General Mohammad Bagheri, General Hossein Salami, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh. State media reported a total of 60 individuals honored during the “procession of the Martyrs of Power,” with mass prayers held at Tehran’s Azadi Square.

During the funeral, President Masoud Pezeshkian and other high-ranking officials, including adviser to the Supreme Leader Ali Shamkhani, were present. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized the resolve of the Iranian people, stating they protected their honor against adversaries with nuclear capabilities, while expressing pride in their defiance. Notably, there has been no recent public commentary from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has not made any public appearance since the conflict erupted.

This conflict, ignited by Israeli airstrikes on June 13 targeting Iranian nuclear installations, marks the most significant military engagement for Iran since the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. Following these strikes, Iran retaliated with missile barrages aimed at Israeli targets, prompting further escalation when the United States intervened with strikes on Iranian facilities on June 22.

According to various reports, the conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Iranian health officials citing 610 deaths on their side and activist agencies estimating the toll at 974, including civilians. Israel reported 28 fatalities and thousands of injuries. The situation highlights the increasing volatility in the region, raising concerns about a wider conflict as both nations continue to assert their military capabilities.

Despite the grim reality of ongoing violence, diplomatic efforts are highlighted as crucial in resolving the tensions. The United Nations has been involved in monitoring the situation, and there is a continued push for dialogue aimed at reaching a peaceful settlement to avoid further escalation. Engaging in constructive conversations remains vital, emphasizing the hope that a path toward stability can still be forged in such a challenging environment.
