The tragic incident involving the 17-year-old son of an Assistant Minister, who is now under investigation for driving a government vehicle without permission, is gaining attention. The accident occurred on Bau Road, resulting in the deaths of two men aged in their 40s.
According to reports, the teenager allegedly took the keys to the government vehicle while his father was asleep. As he drove along Bau Road, he struck the two victims who were standing by the roadside before fleeing the scene. Afterward, he reported the incident to his father, who then notified the police.
The two victims were transported to the Nausori Health Centre, where they were pronounced dead. The Fiji Police Force has confirmed the ongoing investigation. This incident underscores significant concerns surrounding unlicensed driving and the responsibilities expected from guardians in ensuring safe driving practices among minors.
Similar incidents have recently highlighted the urgency of addressing road safety issues. For instance, earlier that same day, two men lost their lives in a separate accident on Wailoaloa Road in Nadi. These occurrences emphasize the need for greater public awareness and caution on the roads.
In response to these tragic events, authorities are urging communities to engage in discussions about road safety and to promote responsible driving habits, especially among young individuals. The hope is that increased awareness and education can lead to improved road safety and a reduction in fatalities.
