Fifteen-year-old Nehemiah Elder achieved a historic milestone for Fiji by winning two gold medals and a silver medal at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held in Suva. Competing in the men’s 89kg category, Elder set a new Commonwealth Youth record with a lift of 141kg in his first snatch attempt.

This impressive lift laid the groundwork for his subsequent performance, where he successfully lifted 172kg in the clean and jerk, marking a personal best for him. Elder’s total lift of 313kg earned him gold medals in both the Youth and Junior divisions, while securing a silver medal in the senior category.

His remarkable achievements underscore his commitment and the extensive training he has dedicated to reaching an elite level in weightlifting.
