“Teenage Rugby Phenom Earns Spot at Canterbury Bulldogs Academy”

Teenager Timoci Nagusa Junior is currently in Sydney for a one-week trial with the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs at their academy camp.

The 14-year-old from Dratabu, Nadi, is determined to forge his own legacy rather than rely on the reputation of his father, a former Flying Fijian player. Nagusa Jnr has already shown promise in rugby league, despite being new to the sport. He has previously excelled in the Milo Kaji rugby competition and is a standout athlete.

Nagusa Jnr, a student at Marist Brothers High School, holds the sub-junior boy’s shot put record with a throw of 15.04 meters. He is also a member of the school’s Under-14 rugby union team.

“Rugby league is a whole different game, style, rules, and an eye-opener. Nothing is impossible if the mind is open and the heart is willing,” Nagusa Jnr said. “The NRL atmosphere is really ‘wowza’.”

His mother, Makereta Losalini Tuilevuka, expressed pride and gratitude, calling the opportunity a blessing. “JJ has no prior knowledge of the game, and I am amazed at his progress. The Canterbury Bulldogs are testing him, and he will come back with a program to follow. He wants to return before Saturday for his Marist U14 semifinals,” she said.

Speaking from Sydney, Nagusa Jnr mentioned his commitment to taking one opportunity at a time and working hard. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to rugby league but is determined to make his mother proud.

Born in Montpellier, France, Nagusa Jnr lived there for five years before returning to Fiji. He was discovered by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata, who saw potential in the young athlete. Kativerata introduced Nagusa Jnr to the Bulldogs camp, noting the youngster’s ability to listen and follow instructions—traits not commonly seen in players his age.

NRL superstar Viliame Kikau is also mentoring Nagusa Jnr, offering advice on schedules and best practices. “When he returns, we will have a conversation. He has the talent, and we need to nurture him carefully to help him shine,” Kativerata added.
