A youthful team from Naboutini Village demonstrated their talents at the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s 2024 tournament, clinching the Shield Final with a decisive 24-7 victory against the home team, Bainivualiku Vatulele. The secondary school players participated in this two-day event not only to gain valuable experience but also as a positive diversion from the temptations of illicit drugs.

Team coach Setefano Naitonicagi expressed his joy following the match, acknowledging the significance of their triumph. He said, “Firstly, we would like to thank God for the win today and for protecting us, ensuring we sustained no injuries or lost a life even.” Coach Naitonicagi emphasized that the team’s formation aimed to steer the youth away from drug use, with members ranging from years 11 to 13.

The preparation leading up to the tournament included team camping at the Naboutini Village Hall and training sessions at the scenic Sigatoka Sand Dunes. Naitonicagi noted that winning the Shield would motivate the team to continue pushing their limits. He remarked, “This is just the beginning. I’ll take them to other sevens tournaments as well since it’s now the school holidays.”

The coach also expressed gratitude towards the local villagers and supporters for their encouragement and help throughout their preparation, which played a crucial role in their success.

This achievement not only highlights the sporting talent of young players but also serves as a reminder of the positive impact that sports can have in steering youth towards healthier choices. The team’s journey has just begun, and their victory may inspire others to pursue their passions while avoiding negative influences.
