Teen Fijian Leader Inspires Change at U.S. High School

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old from Namata Village in Tailevu with family ties to Nasavu Village in Deuba, has taken the lead as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington, U.S. With a student population of 1,606 spanning grades 9 to 12, Deborah’s accomplishments as a Fijian student have made her family extremely proud.

While her parents reside in Fiji, Deborah is cared for by her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S. “When I was running for the position, I was encouraged by many students and teachers,” she explained. She initially underestimated her influence but realized her impact on the school community upon winning the election on February 29, receiving a significant majority of votes. “Winning with the biggest number of votes brought me so much joy and nervousness, but I believe the Lord has a plan for me.”

Although born in the U.S., Deborah takes great pride in her Fijian heritage. She was elected ASB president on September 4, a role she has embraced since starting at Everett High School in Year 9 in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, expressed her pride, describing Deborah as a cheerful, confident child who aims to bring happiness to others. She noted Deborah’s talent as a singer, mentioning her performances of the American National Anthem at school sporting events.

Recently, Deborah and fellow student leaders attended a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt Adams, designed to enhance their roles. With nearly 500 students participating, the camp emphasized personal growth without the distractions of technology. Deborah found the experience transformative, stating, “The minute I joined leadership, I heard lots of great things about this camp. Little did I know the next six days were going to be the best of my life.”

In addition to her role at Everett High, Deborah was recognized as one of three Rotary Club of Everett Student of the Month for October, which honors exemplary local high school students. One of her teachers praised her kindness and leadership qualities, noting that she inspires those around her.

When asked what advice she would give to other young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals and finding strength through faith. “Know that there are people around you who will support you and those who may not. Lean on your supporters and pray for joy each day; you will notice the difference, and others will too.”
