Joel Jione’s recent appointment as Head Boy of Yat Sen Secondary School complements his leadership journey both in academics and athletics. At just 17 years old, Joel serves as the Junior U19 Captain of the Kai Wai Outrigger Canoe Club, where he manages the dual responsibilities of leading his peers while preparing for a significant upcoming challenge—the Wai Tui International, set to take place from April 3-6 at Wailoaloa Beach, Nadi.

The Wai Tui International event represents a crucial milestone for Joel and his crew, who are eager to showcase their progress after a year of dedicated self-training. The excitement surrounding this competition is palpable among the juniors, who look forward to testing their resilience and skills against not only local talents but also paddlers from across the region.

“Most days we train ourselves, giving each other feedback to push for improvement,” Joel notes, expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity to compete against a broader array of competitors.

Joel credits the discipline he has developed on the water for shaping his leadership style, which he describes as steady, collaborative, and grounded. This mindset has been essential in leading his junior team effectively, especially as they take ownership of their training sessions. He’s grateful for the guidance they receive from senior club members, acknowledging their efforts to provide support amidst their own busy schedules.

Looking beyond the immediate challenge of Wai Tui, Joel has his sights set on an ambitious goal: representing Fiji at the Pacific Games. This dream is underpinned by his commitment, evident through countless early mornings and the unwavering support from his parents, whom he affectionately credits with being his top cheerleaders.

Joel’s influence extends beyond the canoe, as noted by Kai Wai Outrigger Canoe Club President, Katarina Atalifo. She highlights that his success stems from a combination of teamwork, humility, and hard work rather than mere talent. With the upcoming competition, Joel is positioned not just as a competitor but as a young leader who understands that discipline in any field enhances performance in others.

Atalifo also acknowledged other notable achievers within the U19 crew, including Ratu Naulu Faivakibau and Moses Mario, each serving in leadership roles at their respective schools. Her remarks underline the club’s commitment to nurturing young athletes who are not only excelling in sports but are also taking on meaningful responsibilities off the water.

As one of Fiji’s founding paddling clubs, Kai Wai Outrigger Canoe Club returns to the Wai Tui International with renewed determination, guided by a youthful and ambitious U19 team. Under the leadership of promising athletes like Joel, the club exemplifies discipline and character, ultimately contributing to the vibrant paddling scene within Fiji.
