The Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, has called on the public to stay alert regarding the implications of technological innovations and improved internet access in Fiji. Her comments came following a new partnership between Vodafone Fiji and Starlink, which aims to bolster connectivity, particularly in rural and maritime areas.

Tabuya highlighted the dual nature of this advancement, acknowledging its potential benefits while also expressing concern over the rising statistics related to adult content access. It was noted that Fiji ranks fourth globally in Google searches for pornographic material, with such sites among the top ten in data usage within the country.

As co-chair of the anti-pornography taskforce, she urged telecommunications companies and stakeholders to engage in proactive measures. She suggested organizing community awareness sessions focused on responsible internet usage, the risks of excessive screen time, and the serious implications associated with pornography.

Emphasizing the necessity of education and the right tools, Tabuya stated that it is imperative for citizens to navigate the increasingly digital environment cautiously. She pointed out the likelihood of heightened technology-facilitated gender-based violence and violence against children as connectivity improves, urging collaboration to protect communities from these threats.

Tabuya concluded by advocating for a culture of awareness and social responsibility, suggesting that the constructive use of technology can lead to enhanced benefits for families and society as a whole.

This proactive approach from the government reflects a commitment to leveraging technology for positive societal impact while addressing the challenges it may bring. By fostering community education and awareness, Fiji can work towards a safer and more responsible digital landscape that prioritizes the well-being of all its citizens.
