Tebara Festival 1984: A Celebration of Unity and Culture

On September 22, 1984, the Tebara festival kicked off with the theme “Tebara embraces all.” The event began in Nausori with a parade featuring the Royal Fiji Military Forces Band alongside the LDS Technical College marching band. The festival was officially inaugurated by Hafiz Khan, the Chief Administrator of the Nausori Town Council.

One of the notable aspects of the festival was an inter-faith service scheduled for September 23, which included participation from Christian, Hindu, and Islamic communities at Ratu Cakobau Park. Each evening of the festival featured open-air dances accompanied by music from the Cava Brothers, as well as public judging of contestants at Cakobau Park.

Wednesday’s program highlighted Indian culture, showcasing dances such as bhagra, nagra, and kathak, along with an Indian drama and a musical band. The Pacificque night also captivated the Nausori crowd, with performances from various islanders including modern dancer Duffy King from the University of the South Pacific.

The Nausori Health Centre organized a baby show for local mothers. The Fiji Times anticipated a significant turnout of spectators along the streets for the float procession from Visama Rice Mill to Ratu Cakobau Park, marking the festival’s concluding day.

The highlight of the 1984 Tebara festival was the crowning of Miss Tebara by Irene Jai Narayan, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, at 7 p.m. The festivities continued with the annual Tebara Ball, scheduled at the Whistling Duck Club, where contestants and attendees enjoyed dinner and dancing to the music of the Cava Brothers.
