On September 22, 1984, the Tebara festival celebrated its theme “Tebara embraces all.” The event commenced in Nausori with a parade featuring the Royal Fiji Military Forces Band and the LDS Technical College marching band. Chief Administrator of the Nausori Town Council, Hafiz Khan, officiated the festival’s opening.
Highlights included an inter-faith service uniting Christian, Hindu, and Islamic communities, held at Ratu Cakobau Park on September 23. Each night of the festival featured an open-air dance with music from the Cava Brothers, along with public judging of contestants at Cakobau Park.
An Indian night, scheduled for Wednesday, showcased cultural performances including the bhagra, nagra, kathak, as well as an Indian drama and musical band. The Pacificque night welcomed various islanders and included a performance by modern dancer Duffy King from the University of the South Pacific.
The Nausori Health Centre organized a baby show for local mothers. A significant turnout was anticipated for the float procession along the streets from Visama Rice Mill to Ratu Cakobau Park, marking the festival’s final day.
The crowning of Miss Tebara by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Irene Jai Narayan at 7 PM was the main event of the festival. Following this, the annual Tebara Ball was scheduled at Whistling Duck Club, where contestants and guests enjoyed dining and dancing to the Cava Brothers band.
