Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, was filled with emotion as he knelt down in tears of joy upon hearing his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was awarded the Year Eight dux prize at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. The proud father, who grows yaqona in Korovuli Village, celebrated not only her academic achievements but also the sponsorship Repeka received from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, which will allow her to continue her education and pursue her sporting aspirations.
Repeka, who is the second oldest among four siblings, recently triumphed at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games in Suva, winning gold in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters events. Reflecting on her family’s challenges, Mr. Balawa expressed pride, revealing that he had been raising his children alone since his wife left them four years ago. He shared a personal connection with Repeka’s success, as he was also the dux at Bulavou District School in 1989.
Repeka achieved an impressive score of 425 out of 500 in her annual exams and dreams of becoming a primary school teacher. She described her routine of staying in the school hostel with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, highlighting how they visit their father every Friday. Repeka expressed a deep concern for her father’s well-being, often worrying about whether he had eaten during their time apart.
She dedicated her accomplishments to her father, praying for his longevity and recognizing the sacrifices he makes for the family. Repeka expressed gratitude towards her teachers and coach Iosefo Apisai, affirming their support had greatly contributed to her success.
