In a touching moment at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, was overwhelmed with joy as his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was announced as the Year Eight dux award winner. Overcome with emotion, Mr. Balawa dropped to his knees, celebrating not only her academic achievement but also the additional sponsorship from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School to support her future education and sports career.
Repeka, the second eldest of four children, excelled at the school, earning gold medals in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals during the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Mr. Balawa expressed pride in his daughter, noting the similarities to his own educational achievements as he was recognized as the Bulavou District School Year Eight dux in 1989.
Repeka scored an impressive 425 out of 500 on her annual exams, and at just 14 years old, she dreams of becoming a primary school teacher. Despite facing challenges as they stay in the school hostel during the week, she and her siblings—aged six, ten, and 15—look forward to weekends with their father. “Every Friday we go home to spend time with Dad and then return to school on Monday,” she shared.
Repeka also revealed the emotional struggles she faces during meals at the hostel, often worrying about her father’s well-being at home alone, especially since their grandparents have passed away. She praised her father’s dedication, mentioning how he wakes up at 4 a.m. to prepare breakfast for his children and get them ready for school.
In addition, Repeka expressed gratitude to her teachers and her coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support and training that helped her achieve her gold medals. This heartwarming story emphasizes the power of resilience and family support, showcasing how dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.
