Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, could scarcely contain his emotions as his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was honored with the Year Eight dux award at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. Overcome with tears of joy, Mr. Balawa celebrated not only his daughter’s academic achievement but also the sponsorship she received from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, which will support her further education and athletic aspirations.
Repeka, who is the second of four siblings, recently excelled in athletics, winning gold medals in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. With a remarkable exam score of 425 out of 500, Repeka, age 14, dreams of becoming a primary school teacher. She currently resides in the school hostel with her siblings, returning home every Friday to spend time with their father.
Mr. Balawa, a yaqona farmer, has faced the challenges of single parenthood since his wife left four years ago. He expressed pride in Repeka’s achievements, reflecting on his own past as a dux awardee, stating that her success mirrors his own experiences.
Repeka dedicated her award to her father, wishing him long life and expressing concern for his well-being, often thinking of him during difficult moments. She recounted her father’s efforts to ensure his children were well cared for, even waking up early before school to prepare breakfast and help get them ready.
In addition to her academic and athletic success, Repeka thanked her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support in helping her achieve her goals.
