Epeli Balawa, a dedicated single father from Korovuli Village, was overwhelmed with emotion as his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was honored as the Year Eight dux award recipient at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. The announcement brought him to tears of joy, especially as Repeka also received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, allowing her to further develop her educational and athletic talents.
At just 14 years old, Repeka has already made her mark in sports, winning gold in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Mr. Balawa, who has been raising his four children alone since his wife left four years ago, reflected on the challenges he faces. He noted the special significance of Repeka’s accomplishments, recalling that he himself was the Year Eight dux at Bulavou District School back in 1989.
Repeka achieved an impressive score of 425 out of 500 in her annual examinations and has set her sights on becoming a primary school teacher. She stays in the school’s hostel with her younger siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, and returns home to spend weekends with her father. Repeka expressed heartfelt gratitude to her father, dedicating her achievement to him and wishing for his long life.
Her emotional journey included moments of concern for her father when she was at school, often worrying about whether he had eaten. Despite the difficulties, she acknowledges the efforts he puts in, waking up at 4 a.m. to prepare for the day and care for her siblings.
In expressing her gratitude, Repeka thanked her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support in helping her achieve success in her sports endeavors.
