A father of five was overcome with emotion at the graduation ceremony of Fiji National University when he witnessed his eldest son receiving two prestigious awards. Alipate Moli, the family’s sole provider, attended the event with his entire family to celebrate Sakaraia Qilu’s accomplishments, which included the Outstanding Academic Achievement Graduate award in Nursing, as well as a Certificate of Excellence and Dean’s Honours.
“It was the proudest moment for any father who’s been toiling day and night to ensure that his children succeed,” expressed Mr. Moli. He recounted his arduous work schedule as a hotel employee, spending 11 days on the island resort and just three days at home. Despite his limited time with his family, he prioritizes staying connected and regularly calls to check on his children’s progress in school.
Mr. Qilu’s thriving academic journey was not unexpected. He had previously excelled as a student, earning a third-place ranking at Saint Peter Chanel School in Korolevu, Nadroga, and receiving the Best Biology Student trophy during his last two years in high school.
“My passion to pursue nursing stems from my love for caring for people,” Mr. Qilu shared. He expressed his aspirations of either becoming a nurse, a public health worker, or a teacher.
Looking ahead, Mr. Qilu has plans to enroll in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program and ultimately pursue a doctorate. He hopes to inspire his younger siblings about the importance of education, urging them to strive for success and avoid negative influences.
“I’m also thankful to my mother for reminding me of the realities of life, which have guided me to where I am today,” he added. When asked about his advice for others, Mr. Qilu stated, “Get better friends! A strong, supportive circle will uplift you and help you move forward.”
