Tears at Fiji Games: Athletes Left Out Due to System Failures

Six young athletes from Ra faced an emotionally charged situation yesterday at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games hosted at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium, as their names were not registered in the system. This unfortunate oversight prevented them from competing, leading to tears and disappointment among the children, their parents, and supporters.

Ra District president Navu Maiwaqa expressed frustration at the Games officials, highlighting that their failure to accurately document the names of all participating athletes caused significant distress. He said, “It’s really hurting and disappointing for us to be coming all the way from Ra, with the parents and supporters, for this to happen.” The athletes, understandably upset, were prevented from taking part due to what officials described as a system failure.

Maiwaqa explained that around 20 to 30 athletes were affected in one event alone, particularly in the 800 metres, with four Ra athletes unable to compete due to the registration issues. He appealed for flexibility from the Games organizers, pointing out that at the grassroots level, human errors should allow for some adjustments rather than strict adherence to a faulty system.

One of the athletes who had previously secured a gold medal faced a heartbreaking moment when her name was initially absent from the list, nearly denying her the recognition she had earned. Fortunately, after a re-check, her name was found, and she received her medal. However, the incident left a mark on both the young athlete and her peers.

Patrick Bower, president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, acknowledged the challenges faced by the organizers in managing the entries and emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules regarding entry deadlines. He encouraged district managers and athletes to respect these guidelines, underscoring the need for system integrity while balancing understanding of the human element involved.

Despite this setback, there is hope for future improvements, as the dialogue around system flexibility and athlete treatment suggests a commitment to enhancing the athlete experience at such events. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough preparations and communication in sporting events, particularly those involving young athletes, who deserve every opportunity to shine on the field.
