Team Fiji’s athletics team is facing a pressing financial challenge as it aims to secure the remaining $49,000 needed to participate in the Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau, later this month. Athletics manager Iva Volavola has stated that the total levy required for participation is $120,000, with each athlete and official expected to contribute $3,000. While the team has successfully raised a substantial portion of this amount, they are now urgently seeking support from the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) for a deadline extension on their payments.

Volavola reported that fundraising efforts, including the Saqamoli Appeal and a raffle featuring 20 prizes, are ongoing in the hopes of covering the outstanding fees. The appeal has gained momentum recently and Volavola expressed optimism about the community’s response. Currently, the national squad comprises 33 athletes and seven officials, and they are preparing to take steps to ensure their participation without compromising the number of athletes that can be sent.

The financial challenges are reflective of broader trends seen in Fiji’s sports community, as similar hurdles have been reported across various federations striving to meet their financial obligations for the Mini Games. The dedication of athletes and their families in fundraising initiatives has been commendable, demonstrating immense community spirit to support the athletes preparing for international competition.

Overall, the commitment displayed by Team Fiji and its supporters illustrates a unified effort to enable these young athletes to reach their full potential, not only at the Mini Games but also as a stepping stone towards greater future competitions like the 2028 Olympics. The community’s support offers a hopeful outlook as Team Fiji works diligently to represent their country on the world stage.
