Team Fiji’s Olympic Journey: A Silver Lining and a Taste of Home

Team Fiji concluded the 2024 Paris Olympics by securing one silver medal, placing them 74th in the official medal standings. The silver was achieved by the men’s rugby sevens team following their 28-7 defeat to the host nation, France.

Most of the athletes were under 20 years old and participated in their first Olympic Games, expressing pride in representing their country. They are now focused on enhancing their skills to qualify for the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

In a show of community support, members of the Fijian community in Paris hosted Team Fiji for dinner. Linda Acker and Eric Acker, along with Atonina Lasagavibau, Fero Lasagavibau, and Joe Rokocoko, prepared a meal for the athletes and offered a traditional sevusevu ceremony.

Sale Sorovaki, Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission, expressed gratitude to the hosts for their generosity, which made the team feel welcomed. He noted the athletes’ enthusiasm for experiencing Fijian cuisine and enjoying time with fellow Fijians in Paris.

Acker shared her emotional perspective, stating it was a privilege to host the young Olympians. Former All Black Joe Rokocoko also emphasized the significance of the gathering, viewing it as a small gesture of appreciation for this remarkable group of young Fijian athletes who have now made their Olympic debut.
