The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has communicated that federations are expected to contribute a minimum levy of $3,000 for each athlete participating in the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled from June 29 to July 9. Chief Executive Vanessa Kilner revealed that the overall cost per athlete is roughly $15,500, with expenses shared equally among the Fijian Government, FASANOC, and the respective sporting federations—each covering one-third of the total costs.

Kilner emphasized the importance of early financial planning for federations, stating that the $3,000 contribution is the lowest possible amount required. She noted that while the federations are officially accountable for this levy, many often pay a smaller fraction, ranging from 20 to 25 percent of the athlete’s total expenses. This scenario highlights a significant financial burden on athletes and their families who may need to supplement these costs through fundraising initiatives.

In preparation for the Mini Games, federations are encouraged to engage in regular fundraising activities. Recently, various sporting teams across Fiji have adopted innovative strategies to alleviate financial pressures, including selling lottery tickets and organizing community events to fundraise for their athletes’ participation. For instance, Athletics Fiji has been particularly proactive by mobilizing fundraising campaigns and seeking sponsorships to cover the levies.

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, demonstrating a collective unity that has historically characterized Fijian sports. As the event approaches, a strong sense of determination and resilience among athletes and support staff signifies a hopeful outlook for Team Fiji in showcasing their talent on an international stage.

The upcoming Pacific Mini Games serve not only as a platform for athletic achievement but also an opportunity to strengthen national pride and community spirit through sports. With the collaborative efforts of federations and local communities, there is an optimistic atmosphere for Team Fiji as they prepare to represent their country in Palau.
