Fiji is preparing for the Pacific Mini Games, scheduled to take place in Palau from June 29 to July 9, and thus far, eleven out of the twelve sports expected to represent the nation have settled their participation levies. Vanessa Kilner, the chief executive of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), provided these updates while explaining the financial responsibilities that fall on national sporting organizations and the grant provisions from the Fiji National Sports Commission.
Kilner reported that while all but one sport has managed to pay the levies, Team Fiji requires approximately $3.5 million to support 186 athletes, along with team officials and support staff to participate in this prestigious event. Each athlete’s total cost is approximately $15,500, with a levy of $3,000 being the minimum contribution expected from the sporting federations. According to Kilner, the financial burden is shared equally among FASANOC, the government, and the respective national federations, each covering about one-third of the costs.
The FASANOC chief executive expressed concern regarding one of the federations that has not yet fulfilled its financial obligations, stressing that this failure adds unnecessary stress on athletes. She clarified that the levies are meant to be covered by the federations, not the athletes themselves, although some federations may ask for contributions from their members. Kilner noted that while not every federation is struggling, the importance of timely financial planning cannot be overstated, and proactive fundraising initiatives can significantly aid in fulfilling these commitments.
The approaching Mini Games serve as a vital platform for showcasing Fiji’s athletic talent on an international stage, while also instilling national pride and community spirit. Fundraising activities, such as selling lottery tickets and organizing events, have proven effective as federations work collectively to support their athletes. The positive community response signifies a unified effort toward ensuring that all athletes can participate without financial strain, highlighting the indomitable spirit and resilience of Fijian sports.
As the date for the Pacific Mini Games nears, there is a hopeful outlook that Team Fiji will not only overcome existing financial challenges but will also shine brightly in their respective sports, showcasing their hard work and dedication.
