“Team Fiji 7s Captain Opens Up About Olympic Disappointment”

Team Fiji 7s women’s captain Raijeli Daveua has openly admitted that the team failed miserably after finishing last at the France Olympic event. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bronze medalists encountered a series of defeats: a 17-14 loss to Canada, a shocking 40-12 thrashing by Olympic debutants China, a 38-7 defeat by eventual gold medal winners New Zealand, a 28-22 loss to Brazil in the ninth place playoff, and a 21-15 defeat by South Africa in the match for the 11th position.

Entering the Stade de France ranked sixth, the Fijiana side returned home in last place, having lost all their games. “It hurts, it hurts so much,” said an emotional Daveua. She attributed the poor performance to a lack of mental focus among the players, noting that many lost sight of their goals upon arriving at the Games Village and focused more on individual play.

Daveua praised the coaches for their preparation efforts but expressed disappointment in the team’s execution. She stated, “The coaches did their job; it was just the players with their mental preparation.” The loss to China, in particular, was unexpected and highlighted shortcomings in various aspects of the game.

Despite the disappointing performance, Daveua emphasized the importance of paying attention to the small details, especially since the Olympics is a rare event with significant pressure. She also mentioned that there were no major injuries in the team, which is a positive takeaway.

When asked about her future plans, Daveua revealed her interest in coaching. She said, “I hope to take up coaching but time will tell. I will go back to work and spend time with my loved ones but for now, my goal is to go into coaching.”
