Authorities are currently investigating a disturbing situation involving a man’s aggressive teaching methods aimed at young children, which were showcased in a viral video that has sparked national outrage. The footage depicted a man harshly instructing a child to count, resulting in visible distress and tears.
Following the initial video, a second clip surfaced, allegedly featuring the same individual using similar abusive tactics on a toddler. The original video collected nearly 1,000 reactions and over 60 shares online, with some viewers shockingly endorsing the behavior.
Police have confirmed that they are questioning the man involved and underline that the investigation is ongoing. The commitment to seeking justice for the affected child highlights the seriousness of the matter.
Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has publicly condemned the incident and emphasized the ministry’s dedication to protecting children from violence. She stated that the ministry is collaborating with law enforcement to address the issue and has initiated an investigation.
In her remarks, Ms. Kiran cited alarming statistics revealing that about 72 percent of children in Fiji have encountered some form of violence, whether physical, emotional, or sexual. Many such incidents occur in spaces that should be safe for children, including homes and schools.
Ms. Kiran pointed out that harsh disciplinary methods, often justified by an intense desire to educate, have regrettably become prevalent. She stressed the long-term detrimental effects that trauma from such experiences can have on children’s learning and development.
To combat this issue, the minister highlighted the importance of educational initiatives that promote healthy parenting practices. She advised that younger parents, in particular, may need support to understand effective and non-violent methods of education and discipline.
Ms. Kiran’s ministry is actively working on campaigns that inform parents about appropriate practices, define what constitutes violence against children, and outline strategies for prevention. She firmly asserted that every child in Fiji deserves to grow up in a secure and nurturing environment, free from the fear of violence.
