Around 395 teachers who have recently enhanced their qualifications are set to receive their salary upgrades, with 50 percent of the payment scheduled for distribution shortly and the remaining half expected in January next year. During a congress hosted by the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and the Ministry of Education at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that these teachers are now qualified for the salary adjustments.
In addition, 103 assistant principals will also benefit from salary increments to distinguish their roles from heads of departments. Mr. Radrodro emphasized that these incentives are vital for acknowledging teachers’ contributions and retaining their professional expertise, which is essential for the advancement of the education sector.
Mr. Radrodro addressed the educators, reminding them of their significant role in shaping the future through education. He encouraged them to seize the opportunity to collaborate during the conference, which gathered a diverse group of educational professionals, including heads of departments and school principals.
The congress theme, “Transforming Education: Closing Gaps, Connecting Minds, Shaping Tomorrow,” highlights the joint efforts between the Ministry of Education, the FTRA, and all educational stakeholders to enhance Fiji’s education system. Mr. Radrodro called on educators to not only focus on imparting knowledge but also on nurturing the character of their students, citing Martin Luther King Jr.’s belief that true education involves developing both intelligence and character.
Furthermore, the Minister pointed out the pressing issue of literacy and numeracy, pointing to the challenges faced by many students entering secondary school without adequate reading and writing skills. He encouraged educators to explore alternative curricula and training programs to bridge these gaps and address learning challenges, including those related to autism and behavioral issues.
Mr. Radrodro concluded with a call for collective action to ensure that every student has the opportunity to excel.
