Good news has emerged for teachers just in time for Christmas. A number of educators will receive salary upgrades due to enhancements in their qualifications. Paula Manumanunitoga, the general secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA), credited the unions for their hard work at the negotiation table, which led to this positive development.
For several years, the FTA had advocated for teachers who had improved their qualifications to be fairly compensated. This issue dates back to a policy introduced by the FijiFirst party government, which was unexpectedly halted in 2019. Following discussions between both teacher unions—FTA and the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU)—and the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, an agreement was reached. It was decided that teachers who upgraded their qualifications would receive 50% of their salary increment this week, with the remaining balance to be paid in January 2025. In total, 395 teachers will benefit from this reinstatement.
In addition to this development, the unions are currently engaged in negotiations with the ministry to address the concerns of teachers who have long taught with only a certificate or diploma. Despite their extensive experience—some exceeding 20 years—they are earning lower salaries compared to newer graduates who hold degrees but have minimal teaching experience. Mr. Manumanunitoga highlighted that these seasoned teachers possess valuable knowledge and skills that deserve acknowledgment in their pay scales.
The Ministry of Education has committed to reviewing this salary disparity in 2025, and the FTA has expressed gratitude to Mr. Radrodro for his willingness to consider their requests. Despite challenges related to budgetary submissions, Mr. Radrodro utilized his accounting expertise to realign funds to address these pay discrepancies.
Muniappa Goundar, the FTU general secretary, also expressed satisfaction regarding the pay upgrade for qualified teachers. The FTU is in discussions with the ministry to re-employ educators who have returned to Fiji from overseas.
With the imminent announcement of the salary upgrades by Mr. Radrodro, this development is a great step towards recognizing and rewarding the dedication of teachers in Fiji.
In conclusion, this news not only brings immediate relief and joy to numerous teachers during the holiday season but also lays the groundwork for more equitable compensation practices in the future. It signifies a commitment to valuing experience and promoting professional development within the teaching community.
