A wave of positive news is heading into the holiday season for teachers in Fiji as many educators are set to receive salary upgrades due to improved qualifications. Paula Manumanunitoga, the general secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA), expressed gratitude to the teacher unions for their dedication during negotiations that led to the reinstatement of these upgrades.
This development comes after a policy initiated by the previous government, FijiFirst, was halted in 2019. Manumanunitoga highlighted that the collaborative efforts of both the FTA and the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) in discussions with Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro played a critical role in reinstating salary improvements.
As part of this recent agreement, 395 teachers who have enhanced their qualifications will receive 50 percent of their salary increment this week, with the remaining amount scheduled for payment in January 2025. Manumanunitoga called attention to the ongoing negotiations concerning veteran teachers, many of whom have decades of experience but are compensated less than newer educators holding degrees.
The Ministry of Education has committed to reviewing these discrepancies in 2025, which brings a hopeful outlook for the many experienced but underpaid teachers. Manumanunitoga acknowledged the efforts of Minister Radrodro for understanding the situation and making adjustments within the budget to accommodate these changes.
Additionally, Muniappa Goundar, the general secretary of the FTU, celebrated the decision to ensure that teachers who have upgraded their qualifications receive a fair wage. Goundar also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding re-employing teachers returning from overseas.
With Minister Radrodro expected to make an announcement regarding the overall salary upgrades soon, there is a growing sense of optimism within the teaching community as they look forward to much-deserved recognition for their hard work and dedication.
This development not only reflects the importance of addressing pay equity in the teaching profession but also represents a significant step towards valuing and investing in experienced educators for the benefit of future generations.
