Teachers Empowered: New Leaders for Scouting in Fiji’s Maritime Regions

Thirty-two teachers from the maritime islands of Lau and Lomaiviti have recently completed a two-day Scouts leadership training program aimed at empowering them to lead and implement scouting activities within their communities. The training, which concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, is part of a broader initiative by the Fiji Scouts Association to enhance community involvement and youth development.

Joji Qaranivalu, the national executive commissioner of the Fiji Scouts Association, expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Education for their support in facilitating this program. He emphasized the organization’s mission to train leaders, noting that effective scouting requires well-trained leaders who can deliver programs professionally. Qaranivalu pointed out the unique challenges faced in reaching remote areas like Lau and Lomaiviti, making this training particularly significant as it strengthens scouting in these regions.

The program focused on holistic development, instilling the core values of scouting, including the Scout promise, motto, and laws, which the teachers can pass on to their students. This initiative aims to foster good citizenship and leadership skills among Fiji’s youth. Following the training, the teachers are expected to establish scout troops at their schools and create program plans for various scouting activities. Their progress will be monitored by cluster leaders and district commissioners to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives.

Moreover, this effort complements broader educational and community development goals in Fiji. In a related effort, other initiatives are encouraging youth participation in leadership roles across the nation, which fosters not only personal growth but also development within their communities.

As the Fiji Scouts Association plans to conduct monthly training sessions across all 27 scouting districts once the school term begins, there is hope that these programs will lead to a stronger foundation of youth leaders capable of making a positive difference in their communities. This ongoing commitment to youth development is essential for nurturing responsible and engaged citizens for the future.
