In a positive development for educators, several teachers in Fiji will receive salary upgrades due to their enhanced qualifications, just in time for Christmas. The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) general secretary, Paula Manumanunitoga, credited the hard work of teacher unions in negotiating reinstatement of this salary adjustment.
Manumanunitoga highlighted that the policy for salary increments based on upgraded qualifications was initially implemented by the FijiFirst government, but was abruptly ended in 2019. Thanks to the joint efforts of the FTA and the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU), the issue was raised with the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro.
Following discussions in early December, it was confirmed that 395 teachers who updated their qualifications would receive 50% of their salary increment this week, with the remaining amount to be dispensed in January 2025.
The unions are also advocating for veteran teachers, many of whom have been teaching for over 20 years with only certificates or diplomas, to receive a fairer salary compared to less experienced degree holders. Manumanunitoga remarked on the wealth of knowledge and experience these long-serving teachers possess, arguing they deserve equitable pay.
The Ministry of Education has committed to reviewing these salary concerns in 2025. Manumanunitoga expressed gratitude towards Minister Radrodro for his willingness to listen and take action, especially after budgetary submissions were not fully addressed by the Minister for Finance.
FTU general secretary Muniappa Goundar echoed this sentiment, voicing satisfaction over the newfound recognition for those teachers who have advanced their education. Furthermore, the FTU is in discussions with the ministry regarding the re-employment of teachers who have returned to Fiji from overseas.
With an announcement on the salary upgrades from Mr. Radrodro expected soon, there is a sense of hope building in the education sector regarding improved conditions for teachers.
In summary, the reinstatement of salary increments for qualified teachers represents a significant step forward, demonstrating the power of collective bargaining and the dedication of teachers to secure fair compensation for their hard work and professionalism.
