In a positive development for educators, many teachers in Fiji will soon see an upgrade in their salaries due to enhanced qualifications. This news comes as a Christmas gift to the teaching community, highlighting the role of teacher unions in securing these upgrades after protracted negotiations. Paula Manumanunitoga, general secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA), acknowledged the hard work of unions in advocating for fair remuneration for teachers whose qualifications have improved.

The upgrading policy was initially implemented by the previous FijiFirst government but was halted in 2019. Since then, the FTA has been advocating for teachers’ rightful compensation. Thanks to the joint efforts of the FTA and the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU), Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has agreed to reinstate these salary increments. This week, teachers who have upgraded their qualifications will receive 50% of their salary increase, with the remainder expected in January 2025. A total of 395 teachers will benefit from this upgrade.

Beyond this specific upgrade, the unions are also working to address broader salary disparities among teachers. Many seasoned educators, some with over 20 years of experience, are still earning less than newer teachers with only a degree and limited teaching experience. The Ministry of Education has acknowledged this issue and plans to review it in 2025.

Manumanunitoga expressed gratitude for Minister Radrodro’s willingness to listen and adapt the budget to resolve these salary anomalies, despite obstacles in funding allocation. FTU general secretary Muniappa Goundar expressed satisfaction that teachers who pursued further qualifications are finally being recognized in their compensation structure.

Looking ahead, there are plans for further discussions to potentially re-employ teachers who have returned to Fiji after teaching abroad. The anticipated announcement regarding salary upgrades from Minister Radrodro represents a step forward for educators, reinforcing the value of experience and continuous professional development in the teaching profession.

This news reflects an important recognition of the hard work and dedication of teachers, and the collaboration between unions and government officials is paving the way for a more equitable compensation system in education.
