The issue of a shortage of primary school teachers was a major concern discussed at the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva, according to the Ministry of Education.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the problem and noted that it has affected numerous schools within the province. “We recognize the lack of teachers and are committed to finding effective solutions to assist these schools,” he stated.

He indicated that the shortage of primary school teachers is a longstanding issue inherited by the current Coalition Government. Steps are being taken to recruit recent graduates from secondary school teacher programs who are willing to teach at the primary level.

Radrodro highlighted the increasing need for educators in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. “We are collaborating with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming year to enhance the recruitment of teacher trainees,” he said, adding that they hope to inspire more graduates to fill roles where there is significant demand.

He encouraged students in the province to aspire for greater achievements. “Dream beyond the walls of the classroom. Opportunities are always available, so don’t doubt yourself as you work towards achieving your goals. Stay focused on your objectives and always prioritize your faith,” he advised.
