A parent has been remanded by the Magistrate’s Court in Labasa following an alleged assault on a teacher within a school setting. Shahila Bi is facing a charge of assault and appeared before Magistrate Amelia Vavadakua, represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Iosefo Rusaqoli.

The incident reportedly took place at Vunika Primary School around 8am on Wednesday, when Bi is accused of physically assaulting a Year One teacher over a back-to-school assistance form meant for her daughter. The court later reconvened, giving Bi an opportunity to arrange for a surety to secure her release on bail.

Furthermore, the accused faces an additional assault charge involving her mother, in which she was unable to arrange surety. Police prosecutor Constable Bimlesh Chand suggested a referral for Bi to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Saint Giles Hospital, highlighting her lack of cooperation with police during investigations.

Magistrate Vavadakua approved the request for a medical examination, and Bi has been remanded until her next court appearance scheduled for November 19.

This case underscores the importance of maintaining safe and respectful environments within educational institutions while also addressing mental health concerns for individuals involved. The actions taken by the court reflect a balanced approach to justice, considering the well-being of both the accused and the victim.

Overall, it serves as a reminder of the need for open communication and support systems within schools to help prevent conflicts and ensure the safety of both educators and families.
