Forecasters have their eyes set on Tropical Disturbance TD09F, which is projected to move southwest of Fiji from Saturday into Sunday. While no direct impacts are expected at this time, the system is anticipated to significantly influence local weather conditions.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that the shallow weather system is currently situated near Vanuatu and is likely to intensify further. According to their statement, Tropical Disturbance TD09F is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression by this evening and could evolve into a tropical cyclone by tomorrow.

Despite remaining offshore, the system’s closeness is still expected to affect Fiji’s weather patterns, particularly as the weekend progresses. The Fiji Met indicated that although a direct impact is not predicted, residents should be prepared for strong north-westerly winds accompanied by occasional heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

The forecast anticipates average wind speeds of approximately 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour in coastal and exposed areas. As the weather system advances southward on Monday, a trough of low pressure is expected to linger southwest of Fiji, keeping moist north-westerly winds flowing across the nation.

In light of these anticipated weather conditions, a heavy rain alert has been issued for the Western Division and Kadavu, starting from Saturday. Alongside this, a strong wind alert has also been put into effect for these same regions.

Meteorologists have warned that residents should be aware of potential hazards such as flash flooding, river flooding, and strong winds that could result in broken tree branches and potential damage to older or less sturdy buildings, including those made of corrugated iron or timber. The most critical period for weather disturbances is expected to be from late Saturday through Tuesday, prompting the weather office to encourage the public to stay vigilant, follow precautionary measures, and keep abreast of official forecasts and warnings.

Overall, the community is urged to remain prepared and informed as meteorologists continue to monitor the situation closely.
