Tropical Depression TD03F is currently moving east-southeast towards the northern regions of the Fiji Group, bringing with it rain and strong winds that are expected to affect the country until late Thursday. As of 9 a.m. today, the system was located approximately 640 kilometers west-northwest of Yasawa-i-rara and about 825 kilometers west of Labasa.
Despite its current trajectory, the depression has a very low chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone, with its movement recorded at about 10 kilometers per hour. A Heavy Weather Warning is in effect for the entire Fiji Group, accompanied by a Flash Flood Warning. Furthermore, a Flood Warning remains active for low-lying areas prone to flooding, particularly adjacent to the Nakauvadra River (near Rakiraki town), Yaqara River at Naseyani, Tavua River, and Ba River.
The associated low-pressure trough continues to cause overcast conditions across the region, with ongoing rainfall leading to an increased risk of flash flooding, especially since the ground is already saturated from previous rain. The Fiji Meteorological Service anticipates that TD03F will pass through the northern parts of the Fiji Group later on Thursday, subsequently weakening over the Lau Group.
Rainfall is expected to persist until Thursday, gradually easing and clearing from the west on Friday. Additionally, strong northerly winds, averaging 50 km/h with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h, are forecasted to affect northern parts of Vanua Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca Groups, and northern Lau from later today through Thursday.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is diligently monitoring this weather event and will provide updates on warnings and forecasts as necessary. The public is advised to stay informed, keep track of official weather updates, and take all necessary precautions during this period of inclement weather. With vigilance and preparedness, communities can mitigate the risks associated with the current weather conditions.
