The Suva City Council (SCC) has reported a notable increase in taxpayers who are making efforts to pay off their rate arrears or set up payment arrangements. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa expressed his appreciation for the encouraging response from the public following the council’s persistent appeals for payment.
While many taxpayers have begun to address their outstanding rates, Mr. Boseiwaqa noted that overall responses still do not meet the necessary levels to significantly reduce the council’s backlog of arrears. “It’s encouraging to see that last week, ratepayers actively filled our office, answering our calls for payment,” he remarked.
Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between the council and taxpayers. He indicated that the council is prioritizing flexible payment options to assist property owners in meeting their obligations without resorting to legal action, which may include court proceedings or property mortgage procedures. “However, if necessary, we may explore those options after all other avenues have been considered,” he added.
The council is currently managing approximately 11,000 ratepayers, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 currently in arrears. Mr. Boseiwaqa pointed out that timely payments, both for ongoing rates and past dues, are critical for maintaining the financial health of the council and ensuring the delivery of essential services.
He acknowledged that there are varying reasons behind the failure to pay, including genuine hardships. Some taxpayers have inherited properties with existing debts, while others are grappling with financial challenges due to issues like early retirement, which has disrupted their financial plans. He noted that many had anticipated retiring at 60 but faced unforeseen early retirement at 55, impacting their financial strategies.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Boseiwaqa affirmed the council’s dedication to collaborating with ratepayers to find practical solutions. He reiterated that the main objective is to facilitate payments, whether in full or through installments, as this structure is mutually beneficial for both the council and the taxpayers.
This proactive stance by the Suva City Council, focusing on understanding and addressing the unique situations of taxpayers, embodies a positive approach to financial management and community support. By fostering cooperation and dialogue, both the council and the citizens can work together toward a healthier financial future for the city.
