A tribunal examining allegations of misconduct against the reinstated Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, has incurred costs of FJ$88,597.45 for the Fijian taxpayers. The details of this expenditure were disclosed in a report from the three-member panel released by the Office of the President.

The tribunal, led by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, included Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, who were sworn in by former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on March 5, 2024. Initially appointed for a three-month term, the tribunal’s tenure was extended twice due to ongoing investigations. The first extension was granted following a request made on May 10, 2024, while the second was prompted by a referral of additional allegations against Pryde, stemming from a section 112(3) advisory from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The additional claim indicated that Pryde had received US$1,000 (approximately FJ$2,313) monthly in superannuation from March 2012 through July 2023, without the necessary approvals. President Katonivere subsequently extended the tribunal’s mandate to December 23, 2024.

The tribunal’s report emphasized the need for qualified counsel, investigators, and secretarial support to ensure its effective operation. Throughout its proceedings, twenty-nine briefings were conducted between March 5 and November 25, 2024, leading up to a five-day hearing from December 2 to 6 of the previous year.

This thorough process reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency within Fiji’s judicial system, which is crucial for maintaining public trust. As the tribunal continues its investigations, there is hope that justice will be served, reinforcing the integrity of legal institutions in Fiji.

In summary, the tribunal’s efforts illustrate the complexities of judicial oversight and the ongoing pursuit of upholding the rule of law in the region, with the potential to strengthen governance and public confidence in legal proceedings.
