Taxpayer Burden: Costly Tribunal Investigates DPP Misconduct

A tribunal investigating allegations of misconduct against Christopher Pryde, the newly reinstated Director of Public Prosecutions in Fiji, has incurred costs totaling approximately $88,597.45 for taxpayers. This information was disclosed in a report published by the Office of the President.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, included Justice Chaitanya Lakshman and Justice Samuela Qica as members. They were sworn in by former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on March 5, 2024, with their initial appointment period set for three months. However, due to the complexity of the case, their mandate was extended twice. The first extension occurred on May 10, 2024, followed by a second extension on September 19, 2024, after additional allegations against Pryde were referred to the Tribunal for further examination.

One key allegation involved Pryde receiving US$1,000 (approximately FJ$2,313) monthly in superannuation from March 2012 to July 2023 without the necessary approvals from the Judicial Services Commission and other governing offices.

To facilitate an efficient investigation, the tribunal appointed legal counsel, investigators, and administrative staff. They conducted 29 briefings from March to November 2024 before proceeding with a five-day hearing from December 2 to December 6 of the same year.

This thorough judicial process underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in handling allegations against public officials. The significant investment in these proceedings, while burdensome to taxpayers, reflects the importance of upholding the rule of law in Fiji. Moving forward, it is hoped that such comprehensive investigations will reinforce trust in public institutions and their leaders.
