Diabetes Fiji Inc. (DFI) is urging the Fijian Government to implement a tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) as part of its national budget proposal for 2025-2026. This measure aims not only to deter unhealthy dietary choices but also to generate funds for vital health initiatives to combat diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

DFI’s Executive Director, Marawa Kini, stated that the revenue from this taxation should be earmarked specifically for health-related programs. He suggested that these funds could be used to subsidize essential medical supplies, support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CSOs) focused on NCDs, and finance grassroots awareness and research endeavors.

In tandem with the proposed SSB tax, DFI has requested a dedicated budget allocation separate from the existing funding provided via the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. This request underscores the necessity for additional resources to broaden their outreach and enhance community-driven health initiatives aligned with both national and international health objectives, including Fiji’s National Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.

While acknowledging the Ministry’s efforts thus far, Kini pointed out that the current funding model limits DFI’s capacity to offer sustainable solutions that address the diabetes epidemic effectively. He emphasized the importance of a dedicated budget to improve prevention strategies, outreach efforts, and overall health system resilience.

DFI envisions a future where all Fijians have access to timely, preventive, and life-saving medical care. They believe that strategic financial investment today can lead to significant public health benefits and lower long-term healthcare costs.

Kini concluded by appealing to the government to consider their proposals seriously, stressing that collaborative efforts could yield a substantial reduction in the diabetes burden and contribute to a healthier Fiji.

By advocating for a tax on sugary beverages and a dedicated health budget, Diabetes Fiji is positioning itself at the forefront of public health reform, presenting a hopeful pathway towards enhanced health outcomes for all Fijians.
