Spread the love

Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in apprehending a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young girls inside. The incident occurred when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade and, while waiting for police assistance, left her keys in the ignition. Seizing the opportunity, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away with the woman’s daughters in the backseat.

Once notified, police quickly alerted taxi operators in the area about the stolen vehicle. Utilizing their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was shared across their network. The vehicle was soon spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped the car to release the two girls.

A vigilant taxi operator intervened, effectively slowing down the situation and allowing police to arrive and detain the suspect. Although he resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers, law enforcement managed to take him into custody, and investigations are continuing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu commended the taxi operators for their swift action and collaboration with law enforcement, highlighting the importance of community engagement in preventing crime. In appreciation of their efforts, a team from the Totogo Police Station will visit the taxi operators to express their gratitude.

This incident serves as a powerful example of how community members can unite to ensure safety and security. The proactive nature of the taxi operators not only helped in protecting the children but also reinforced the vital role that public vigilance plays in law enforcement. Such cooperative efforts can inspire other communities to focus on collaboration and support in addressing crime, potentially leading to safer neighborhoods for everyone.
