A swift response from taxi operators in Suva led to the arrest of a man attempting to steal a vehicle while a woman and her two daughters were involved in an accident. The incident occurred on Victoria Parade when a 28-year-old woman left her car’s ignition running as she waited for police assistance. Seizing the opportunity, an unidentified man jumped into the vehicle, driving off with the woman’s daughters still in the backseat.

Upon learning of the incident, local taxi drivers were alerted by the police about the stolen vehicle. Utilizing their Radio Transmitters, they broadcast the vehicle’s information across the Suva area. The stolen car was eventually stopped on Rewa Street as the man attempted to offload the two girls. This crucial intervention by the taxi operators gave police the chance to pursue and apprehend the suspect, although he resisted arrest and assaulted four officers in the process.

Currently in police custody, the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the taxi operators for their crucial role in the apprehension. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the community and law enforcement to tackle such crimes effectively. To show appreciation for their bravery and support, a team from Totogo Police Station will be visiting the taxi operators to express gratitude.
