Taxi drivers in Suva recently showcased their community spirit by playing a crucial role in the apprehension of a car thief who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside.
The incident unfolded late last night when a 28-year-old woman, who had been involved in a minor collision on Victoria Parade, left her car keys in the ignition while waiting for police assistance. Taking advantage of the situation, a man jumped into her car and drove off with her two daughters in the backseat.
Authorities were alerted quickly, and police notified taxi operators in the vicinity about the stolen vehicle. Using their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was efficiently disseminated throughout the network, leading to the vehicle’s sighting on Rewa Street. At this point, the suspect stopped the car to let the girls out safely.
One vigilant taxi operator intercepted the vehicle, which allowed police enough time to arrive and detain the suspect. Although the man resisted arrest and assaulted four officers, he was ultimately taken into custody, with investigations continuing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, commended the swift actions of the taxi operators. “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime,” he stated.
To show appreciation for their quick response, representatives from the Totogo Police Station plan to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their valuable assistance in this critical situation.
This story highlights the importance of community collaboration in law enforcement and showcases how timely information-sharing can lead to the swift resolution of incidents, ultimately ensuring safer neighborhoods for families.
