Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the swift apprehension of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident unfolded last night when a 28-year-old woman briefly left her car unattended following a minor accident on Victoria Parade, leaving her keys in the ignition.

Taking advantage of the situation, a suspect jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away with the woman’s two daughters seated in the back. The police were quickly notified, and the surrounding taxi operators were alerted about the stolen vehicle.

Using their Radio Transmitters (RT), the taxi network disseminated the information promptly. The stolen vehicle was spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped the car and let the two girls out. A vigilant taxi operator intercepted the vehicle at that moment, buying critical time for the police to arrive and apprehend the suspect.

Although the man resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers, he was nonetheless taken into custody, and investigations are currently underway. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, commended the taxi operators for their swift and decisive actions, highlighting the significant impact of community collaboration in crime prevention.

In appreciation of their quick thinking, a team from the Totogo Police Station is scheduled to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their assistance in resolving the incident.

This incident not only highlights the bravery of ordinary citizens in dangerous situations but also fosters a sense of community spirit and cooperation in enhancing public safety. It’s a positive reminder that working together can effectively combat crime and protect the vulnerable.
